"The Corner of Main and Main"

Year Listed: 1999
Location: *United States
Current Status: Endangered
Threat:

In communities coast to coast, shoppers are coming back to Main Street and national drugstore chains are following these customers, but their site development strategies are not always sensitive to Main Street’s unique character, sense of place and pedestrian-oriented nature.

Update

CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreen and Eckerd have all agreed to avoid demolishing buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These agreements have saved many community landmarks from the wrecking ball. Hot competition between the national chains continues and poses ongoing threats to historic buildings at desirable corners.
